Past Continuous

Estrutura e uso

- Expressa ações em progresso em determinado período no passado;

Subject  + to be + main verb + ing 

= Sujeito + estar + verbo principal + ing

I was teaching English at this time yesterday.

Eu estava ensinando inglês a esta hora ontem.

- Descreve ações que ocorriam quando outras acontenceram;

Many people were talking to the teacher when I got in.

Muitas pessoas estavam conversando com a

professora quando eu entrei.

- Verbos que não são usados no Past Continuous;

love  forget      hate  need

like  know        prefer  remember

understand      want

Regras para o Past Progressive

- Acrescenta-se o ing no verbo principal (main verb). Exemplos:

work – working;   trabalhar  trabalhando

sleep – sleeping;  dormir  dormindo

eat – eating;  comer  comendo

study – studying;  estudar  estudando

play – playing;  jogar  jogando

drink – drinking;  beber  bebendo

- Quando os verbos terminarem em –e, retira-se o –e, e adiciona-se o ing. Exemplos:

drive – driving;  dirigir  dirigindo

have – having;  ter  tendo

write – writing;  escrever  escrevendo

leave – leaving;  partir  partindo 

live – living;  morar  morando

take – taking;  tomar  tomando

- Quando o verbo terminar em –ie,retira-se o   –ie,substituindo por y antes de acrescentar o ing. Examples:

lie – lying;  deitar, mentir  deitando

die – dying;  morrer  morrendo

tie – tying;  amarrar  amarrando

- Quando os verbos terminarem em consoante vogal consoante - CVC,  dobra-se a última consoante e adiciona-se o ing. Examples:

stop - stopping;   parar  parando

swim - swimming;   nadar  nadando

run - running;   correr  correndo

jog - jogging;   fazer   fazendo cooper

sit - sitting;   sentar  sentando 

cut - cutting;   cortar  cortando

- Contudo, quando os verbos tiverem mais de uma sílaba, a última tem que ser tônica (oxítona). Examples:

begin – beginning;  começar começando

permit – permitting;  permitir  permitindo

limit – limitting;  limitar  limitando

- Caso contrário, não se dobra a última sílaba. 

Ex: listen – listening  escutar  escutando

Affirmative form

I was teaching English  at this time yesterday.
= Eu estava ensinando inglês a esta hora ontem. 

You were studying it an hour ago.
= Você estava estudando-o uma hora atrás.

Ralph was jogging in the park at that moment. 
= Ralph estava fazendo cooper no parque naquele momento.

Tina was driving home at this time last week.
= Tina estava dirigindo para casa a esta hora semana passada.

The child was lying to its mother at that moment.
= A criança estava mentindo para sua mãe naquele momento.

You and I were swimming in the pool.
= Eu e você estávamos nadando na piscina.

David and you were planning to travel .
= David e você estavam planejando viajar.

The children were playing in the garden.
= As crianças estavam brincando no jardim.

Negative form

I was not teaching German yesterday.
= Eu não estava ensinando alemão ontem. 

You were not having lunch last week.
= Você não estava almoçando semana passada.

Ralph was not jogging two hours ago.
= Ralph não estava fazendo cooper duas horas atrás.

Tina was not driving to school last night.
= Tina não estava dirigindo para a escola ontem à noite.

The child wasn’t lying to its father a minute ago.
= A criança não estava mentindo para seu pai há um minuto atrás.

You and I were not swimming in the lake.
= Eu e você não estávamos nadando no lago.

David and you weren’t planning to study.
= Você e David não estavam planejando estudar.

The children weren’t playing soccer an hour ago.
= As crianças não estavam jogando futebol há uma ora atrás.

Interrogative form

Was I teaching French yesterday morning?
= Eu estava ensinando francês ontem de manhã ?

Were you working it last weekend?
= Você estava trabalhando nisso no final de semana passado?

Was Ralph jogging in the park three hours ago ?
= Ralph estava fazendo cooper no parque há três horas atrás ?

Was Tina driving home at this time yesterday ?
= Tina estava dirigindo para casa a esta hora ontem ?

Was  the child lying to its friend last night ?
= A criança estava mentindo para seu amigo ontem à noite?

Were you and I swimming in the sea last week?
= Você e eu estávamos no mar semana passada ?

Were David and you planning to travel ?
= David e você estavam planejando viajar ?

Were the children playing in the garden?
= As crianças estavam jogando no jardim ?
